Beyond Weight-Loss: What is Body Recomposition

BLOG POSTTHE POWER OF PERSPECTIVE AND DANGERS OF COMPARISON (4).png

Have you ever lost a tonne of weight in an effort to ‘look good naked’ or improve your self-confidence?

Maybe you even dropped a few CM’s around the waist or a few sizes in clothing…

But, you were never quite satisfied with the outcome or with what you saw in the mirror?

As Body Recomposition Specialists we deal with a lot of clients who have came to us after ‘losing X on the scales’ - but they still feel they need to ‘lose another 5-10kg’ to be happy.

Yes, they wanted to be ‘smaller’ or ‘lighter’, but they also wanted to be ‘toned’ or ‘tighter’ (as you may describe it).

The problem is, that in the past they have focused purely on ‘weight-loss’ - only caring what the scales said, while not measuring their body-fat or muscle-mass…

Focusing on weight-loss and not body recomposition.

Although the difference between the two maybe obvious to some, it’s very common for this mistake to be made. Many are left unfulfilled after a massive ‘weight-loss’ journey and these mistakes could easily have been avoided if they had focused on ‘Recomping’.

Why Doesn’t Weight-Loss work for me?

Eat-Less, Move-More is usually the approach to basic weight-loss

Eat-Less, Move-More is usually the approach to basic weight-loss

Weight-loss will obviously leave you lighter on the scales and your body-mass will get smaller.

It is achieved from ‘eating-less and moving more’.

Drop your calories to the floor, cut-out any food that is close to being tasty and completing some form of basic training every day of the week etc etc.

Most people who are hell-bent on losing weight, try their hardest to do it in as short as time as possible. They pummel their body into submission, follow some sort of low calorie diet and perform as much cardio based exercise as possible.

It works to a degree…

The outcome is a lighter and smaller frame on the scales. But this doesn’t guarantee a loss in body-fat and no muscle-tissue is stimulated so we don’t achieve that ideal look that we were after in the first place.

You also end up hitting a roadblock or plateauing after your initial success and don’t really have anywhere else to go…

Do you eat even less food?

Do you try and train even more?

What is Body Recomposition?

We can call Body Recomposition ‘looking good naked’ but it is essentially the art of reducing your body-fat while increasing your lean-muscle mass.

Your body-weight may stay the same even or even increase…

But in the mirror, you will appear significantly leaner and more muscular (‘toned’ as you refer to it).

We recomp our clients at PPS by teaching them  ‘eating more and lifting more’.

They don’t starve themselves and will do next to know cardio.

They focus purely on muscle-gain, while their nutrition controls their body-weight and the outcome is fat-loss.

The fastest and most efficient way to burn body-fat is to build muscle.

While, muscle is built from lifting weights and needs enough food to fuel the growth.

If you do reach a sticking point or plateau when ‘Recomping’ you have options available to you such as manipulating your training or caloric intake, to help reignite the fat-burning furnace. In most cases this will actually meaning increasing your calories - which is a luxury you will not enjoy if focused purely on weight-loss.

If you have been forever chasing that weight-loss goal that never comes….

We use BIA - Bio Impedance to assess our clients body composition

Stop assessing your progressing on the scale, starving yourself and spending all your time on the treadmill.

Focus on fuelling yourself with enough food, out-lifting yourself in the gym each week and treating your body with the respect it deserves.

Assessing your progress via. performances in the gym and some form of body composition assessment (BIA, DEXA or Calipers).

This will help you ‘look good naked’, improve your self-confidence and feel pretty bad-ass in the gym too.
